Directions:
1. Place the foam block inside the denim tote in the area in which you want to apply the first part of your design (start with one of the white balls). Take a small amount of white wool roving and roll into a ball, like you would roll clay. Remove the protective sleeve of the needle felting needle. Position the first ball, and while holding the roving in place with your non-dominant hand, stab the needle through the roving, tote, and into the foam block in one motion. This is the basic needle felting action—the barbs on the needle interlock the fibers of the roving with those of the tote with each motion. Repeat until the roving is securely needlefelted onto the tote.
2. Continue to add the white balls to the tote. Outline a few of the circles by coiling an additional piece of loose roving in blues and orchid around selected circles.
3. To create the bird, begin with the bird’s body by shaping pastel blue roving into a teardrop with its point curved upward for the tail. Needlefelt into place.
4. Add a small teardrop shape for the wing with blueberry roving, a triangle shape for the beak using butter roving, and a circle shape for the eye using white and black roving. Create the bird’s feet by rolling the wool into thin lines using nutmeg roving.
5. Sew the aster flower onto the handle of the bag.
